Greek Embroidery, 17th - 19th Century
from the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Benaki Musem, Athens
13 October - 16 November 2006
An exhibition of Greek embroidery from the mainland, Cyprus and the Greek Islands.
Greek embroidery reflects the inventiveness and artistic sensibility of women, who combined primordial symbols and decorative motifs of various origins into compositions that elevate their craft into a form of visual art.
Many varied artifacts – such as festive clothing and objects to decorate the home - provide the exhibition with ample examples to illustrate the wealth and technical diversity of Greek embroidery. The exhibits also highlight regional differences, potential similarities and interactions.
The exhibition allows us to meander through a first class sample of the rich collection of Greek embroidery held by the Victoria & Albert Museum and a number of works from the Benaki Museum. Some of the exhibits were last shown in 1911 and may not be shown for another 100 years, which makes this exhibition a unique and exceptional event.
